About 18 years ago we made our first trip to Costa Rica. On a surf adventure, we headed south to Dominical and after two weeks of non-stop action we knew we would be back.

Already deciding that we wanted a permanent spot, we started the list of the good and bad of the area. We did that several more times as we headed north. After a trip to Mal Pais I had been talking with our local HIC rep Allen about the area. He told me about Nosara and that he had been going for many years and bought property in Guiones and that it had one of the most consistent breaks in Costa, cautioning me not to buy anything until I made a trip there. Sure, I thought, how could it get any better than what I had already seen. I decided to book a trip, why not? My youngest son and I left in mid-November and arrived in San Jose with our gear mid-day. Needless to say “the trains did not run on time” and we were off to Nicoya with the car rental agent to get the car that we had reserved. By the time we actually headed off to Nosara it was dusk and apparent that we would be arriving in the dark against everyone’s recommendations. After the turn off at the Bomba outside of Samara we drove white knuckled to Guiones going through potholes that would swallow a Volkswagen.

The directions were spot on and we arrived at Harbor Reef around 7pm and checked in.

From that point on the experience was unlike any that we had had. The vibe was totally different, maybe we were just exhausted and a Pilsen and Arroz con Pollo would bring me back to my senses.

The next morning, we were out at first light to check the beach. White sand and waves firing everywhere! We sprinted back to the room to get our boards when a local on his bike (peter Gilman) hollered, Slow down you have all morning, besides it hasn’t gotten good yet. After a nice three-hour session we went back to the restaurant and my son Mason and I agreed that we would give it a few more days but that this might be the spot.

Every day was better than the next and we had started looking at property at Nosara Real Estate. The owner must have thought I was too young or not a viable candidate and passed me off to Brandon Richardson so he could go surfing.

Brandon was not only a good guy but he had a keen sense of the area and pointed us in the right direction, K section.

After holding the property for several years, we started the process of building and with Brandon’s help found a good architect and eventually a good builder, which was not easy.

Being a Tile & Stone contractor by trade I knew my way around a jobsite and was not liking what I saw, until I meet Don Luis. I toured a large project in Las Huacas and another not far from there. I went back later that Friday afternoon to let Don Luis know we wanted to proceed and we were in San Jose that Sunday picking finishes.

I spent one week a month or better for the next six months, bringing anything that was not available there and sorting out the details until the project was complete. We have enjoyed the property immensely since then. Have made countless friends, had one wedding and many fond family memories. Our path has taken us in a different direction now and so we move on hoping to pass this special place to another.
