The villa is located at the south of the 5,9-hectare estate, entirely surrounded by jungle. To the north of the property after a hike to the top of the mountain, you will be able to reach the highest part of the property that offers views of the entire Nicoya peninsula. The estate is a natural reserve, home to howler and white face monkeys, toucans, macaws, and the incredible wildlife native to Costa Rica’s Blue Zone. Located on a dead-end road, 500 feet above sea level, Villa Romantica is a magnificent labor of love, the result of 10 years of planning, designing, material research, and 8 years of building. Entering the main villa through the spectacular 27 ft high foyer one is welcomed and dazzled with a magnificent view of the deepest blue ocean on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. The immediate effect is mesmerizing and uplifting – even for the owners to this day. A few steps down the stairs is the true infinity panoramic pool (awarded the international silver medal of excellence by the Association of Pools & Spa Professionals in 2005) is surrounded by a lounge for relaxing, and suntanning after a cool dip (90 degrees water temp) and enjoying Costa Rica’s perpetual spectacular sunsets. On this same level, to the West, we find a well-equipped spacious kitchen, dining area, and outdoor dining terrace. Also, we will find a well-located office/studio space and powder room. A few steps to the east we find the in-suite Master bedroom with open views to the Pacific (through 27ft of windows) and 2 guest bedrooms with a shared bathroom. All bedrooms and service areas are connected in perfect harmony by seamless breezeways so as not to miss a blink of the breathtaking Pacific Panorama.
In 2010, an expansion wing added a state-of-the-art Home Theater room with leather sofas just arrived from Italy and a state-of-the-art, custom-designed Tuscan Wine Cellar. The temperature and humidity-controlled wine cellar has a 1,000-bottle capacity and hosts a most intimate table for two for hide-away dining. On the top level of this new wing is a party terrace with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.
The owners have hosted countless parties, a wedding, and dance nights. The top level of the Villa offers an open-air-billiard room surrounded by the formal Italian-designed garden and Pacific Ocean views. The authentic Renaissance Italian garden built during Covid19 in 2020, is 150ft long and covers an area of 10,000 sq ft. It is lined with Greek lemons, Sicilian olive trees, and grapevines on the central radius pergola, Malaysian Annona fruit trees, Cypresses, and South African Coral trees are some of the imported exotic trees found in the garden. Custom marble statues and fountains adorn the garden. Adjacent there is a Costa Rican tropical garden with paths lined with coffee trees and other Costa Rican tropical plants. Nearby is a vegetable garden, greenhouse, garden shed, and a 10kw propane Generac generator.
Additionally, there is a traditional Italian Wood oven and grill next to a BBQ open terrace able to host large gatherings of 60 or intimately for two, the bougainvillea pergola, a powder room, and manicured gardens and brass fountains highlight this section which was designed more rustic than the rest of the villa. Five storage rooms and two laundry rooms are strategically positioned throughout the Villa making the services to each area handy and strategic.
On the first level of the villa, a two-bedroom, 1 bath apartment is currently used as caretakers’ home. Additionally, an outside studio/office with its own bathroom and kitchenette is currently being used as the Owner’s personal office. The estate is large enough to build additional buildings if so desired. Villa Romantica used the strictest construction codes, and with the best materials, all wood structure is “almendro” which is practically denser than steel. All ceramic tiles are imported from Italy. Construction is masonry reinforced concrete built above Costa Rica building code standards, proof enough that the 2012, 7.6 earthquake did not cause any damage. Roofs are lifetime terracotta tiles to dampen the heat and the sound of the rain. Villa Romantica was designed and built by the Owners over 8 years.
The construction is tailored to custom built to and Italian Dolce Vita style living as it was not built for resale or profit but strictly as the owners’ dream home where we intended to die in. The Owners are the developers of Villas Playa el Roble. They built 5 of the villas on the project and designed many others.
The Owner has a 50-year professional background in construction and been involved in leadership roles in over 100 skyscrapers, Project Manager of the Philadelphia Airport expansion, Designer and PM of the Architectural cladding of the Port of Miami Tunnels, worked as consultant in Algeria and Latin America and the USA.
